BELTON, Texas– The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team earned the program's first American Southwest Conference Men's Soccer championship with a 1-0 win over UT Tyler Sunday afternoon in Belton.

UMHB won the regular season and right to host the 2017 ASC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. The Cru earned a 4-0 semifinal win over Ozarks to earn their spot in the final. UT Tyler earned the No. 2 seed after their regular season and earned a finals spot with a 1-0 win over UT Dallas.

UMHB and the Patriots played a close first half as neither team was able to score. Both teams put up six shots with the Cru putting four of theirs on goal. Lucas Pereira  and Jose Poo both had first-half scoring opportunities for the Patriots, but a leaping save by UMHB goalkeeper Bryce Eichhorn and a kick-save from defender Caleb Vandergriff kept the game scoreless. UMHB constructed several scoring opportunities early in the second half but goalkeeper John McGuffin and the Patriots were able to fight off UMHB's offensive surge. Case Carnes finally netted the conference-winning goal for the Cru in the 81st minute. Carnes finished a pass in the box from Logan Keeler, chipping the ball past McGuffin for the 1-0 lead. The Cru defense gave up just one shot in the final nine minutes of action to secure the win and championship.

Carnes led the Cru with five shots while Steven Dang added four and Keeler put up two. UMHB outshot the Patriots 12-7 in the contest. Eichhorn earned the win for UMHB with one save in the full 90-minute shutout. McGuffin took the loss for UT Tyler, making five saves with one goal allowed.

UMHB improves to 15-2-1 on the season while the Patriots fell to 11-3-3. Steven Dang, Julio Mar and Caleb Vandergriff were all named to the 2017 ASC All-Tournament Team while Case Carnes was the tournament MVP. The Cru earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championships. The NCAA bracket will be announced on Monday, November 6th in a 12:30 p.m. broadcast on NCAA.com. Quarterfinal rounds will be played November 10th -13th.
