TYLER, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split two games on the opening day of competition at the 2016 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament, earning a 4-1 first-round victory over No. 4 seed LeTourneau University before falling 4-1 to national No. 1 University of Texas at Tyler in the quarterfinals. UMHB moved to 20-20 on the season while LeTourneau fell to 20-21 and U.T.-Tyler improved to 38-2.
Kelsi Coleman gave LeTourneau a lead in the first game of the day, hitting an RBI single up the middle to score Brianna Williams for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. LeTourneau held that lead until the top of the fifth inning when
Kourtney Cummings hit a home run to left field, tying the game at 1-1. UMHB took its first lead of the day in the top of the sixth inning when
Dusti Douglas hit an RBI single to left field, scoring
Jade Lassetter.
Cori Drake added an insurance run off an RBI fielder's choice from
Kourtney Bevers to give the Cru a 3-1 lead before
Karley Free singled in
Kourtney Cummings in the seventh, securing the 4-1 victory.
Kourtney Cummings and Drake led the Cru with three hits each while Free added two. Four Crusaders recorded RBI while
Kourtney Cummings added a team-high two runs.
Haley Parker earned the win in the circle for UMHB, pitching the final four shutout innings with just five hits allowed.
Karen Tennis was the Cru's starting pitcher, going three innings with four hits and one run allowed. UMHB totaled 13 hits with four runs while the YellowJackets had one run on nine hits with two errors.
UMHB and U.T.-Tyler remained scoreless through three and half innings in the second game of the day before the Patriots strung together a four-run bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back RBI singles from Kristin Lopez and Cheyenne Thompson opened scoring, allowing Jade Green and Lopez to score. Bianca Van Vlerah was next, hitting an RBI double to score Thompson before Mel Hinojosa hit a double to right field, scoring Van Vlerah for a 4-0 lead. UMHB responded in the top of the sixth, scoring Bevers off an RBI single from
Leah Brown. The Cru was unable to score again, giving the Patriots a 4-1 victory. Brown and Bevers led the Cru with two hits each while Drake and
Kasi Cummings each added one. Tennis took the loss in the circle for the Cru, pitching five innings with eight hits and four runs allowed. UMHB totaled one run on six hits with one error while the Patriots had four runs on nine hits with no errors.
The Cru returns to action tomorrow in a 1 p.m. elimination game against No. 6 seed Louisiana College. The winner of that game will advance to face the winner of No. 4 seed LeTourneau University and No. 3 seed University of Texas at Dallas. No. 1 seed U.T.-Tyler advances to the semifinal round, facing No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist University at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 29
th. The winner of that game advances to the tournament's championship match on Saturday, April 30
th at 5 p.m. The conference champion will advance to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Softball National Championships.
