Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team faced its toughest competition of the 2010 season so far, when the Cru faced off against itself in the team's annual Purple/White game Friday night at Tiger Field. The team went through a two and a half hour controlled scrimmage with scripted scenarios.
The opening segment consisted of the offense starting from its own one-yard line. The #1 offense got off to a rocky start against the #2 defense with a fumble that J.C. Hickman recovered in the end zone for a defensive touchdown on the first offensive play of the scrimmage. But the Cru offense settled down and a long run from Quincy Daniels and long completion from Kyle Noack to Tucker Glaske on a deep post set up a 32-yard Alan Munoz field goal for the first offensive points of the scrimmage.

The #1 defense dominated its first segment against the #2 defense. The defense posted back-to-back safeties, the first forced by Javicz Jones and the second by the entire front wall as the Cru #1 defense did not allow a first down in the opening segment.

Sophomore running back Darius Wilson highlighted the second possession for the #1 offense with a 60-yard touchdown run. Noack also hit Ervin Johnson with a long touchdown pass that would be called back by a penalty. Noack appeared to have Johnson open for another long TD pass on the next play, but Hickman made his second big play of the scrimmage by breaking up the pass at the last minute.

The #1 defense was dominant through most of the second segment as well. But LiDarral Bailey did break a 63-yard touchdown run for the highlight for the #2 offense. Bailey would lead the #1 offense on the next possession and he drove the Cru the length of the field and capped a long scoring drive with a 25-yard TD pass to Johnson. Bailey would then cap his night with a highlight quality 66-yard touchdown run on the first possession of the next segment for the #1 offense. Bailey's big run came one play after Cru linebacker Mike Maldonado's huge hit on an option pitch set up a third down and long.

“We accomplished a lot and got a whole lot of stiff on film and did some really good things tonight,” Cru head coach Pete Fredenburg said. “We've got a long way to go before we are really content with our offense and defense, but I think we really made some great strides tonight.”

The team capped off the scrimmage with timed segments and goal-line situations. Darren Parker blocked a field goal for the #2 defense, Maldonado ended another drive with a diving interception for the #1 defense and Noack tossed a TD pass to Tariekus Ellis for the #1 offense.

In the goal-line segment, Wilson added another pair of short touchdown runs and Noack and Bailey both threw TD passes to Johnson. Edward Hall and Brixx Hawthorne had touchdown runs for the Cru #3 offense.

“A lot of the same guys that you would expect really caught my eye,” Fredenburg said. “But Mike Maldonado really showed up playing with the #1 defense and Darius Wilson looked pretty good to me. We just need to look at the film.”

The scrimmage is the first game action of the fall for the Cru. The film will be used to help break down the roster into the varsity and junior varsity as UMHB prepares for the 2010 season opener at Wisconsin-La Crosse on September 11th.
