Lewisville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team could not overcome U.T.-Tyler's four-run first inning and the Cru dropped a 9-3 decision to the Patriots in the winner's bracket of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Lewisville. UMHB falls to 26-16 overall with the loss and moves into the loser's bracket tomorrow. U.T.-Tyler, the #1 ranked team in country, improves to 37-5 and moves into the Championship Round tomorrow.
UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead when
Kelsey Greeson led off with a double and eventually scored on
Caitlin Bollier's sacrifice fly. The Patriots answered with a four-run bottom of the first. Joey Cronin led off with a solo home run, Allison Hurt added an RBI single and Amanda Busby drove in the final two runs. Greeson's drove in
Sara Roman with a single in the top of the second to cut the lead to 4-2, but Tyler added two more runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it a 9-2 game. Bollier would drive in Greeson with a fielder's choice in the top of the seventh, but that's as close as the Cru could get.
Greeson took the loss for UMHB after getting knocked out of the game in the bottom of the first. Greeson falls to 8-8 on the season. Kimber Bossum earned the win for U.T.-Tyler with five and a third innings of five-hit relief pitching. Greeson had three hits for the Cru and
Erica Salazar added two more in the game.
The Cru will now face Louisiana College in an elimination game at 11:00 AM tomorrow. The winner of that game will then face U.T.-Tyler in the championship game. The winner of the 11:00 AM game will have to beat the Patriots twice to win the ASC title. The ASC Tournament champion also claims the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships.
