Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a dominating pitching performance for a game one win and came within one strike of making it a sweep before McMurry rallied to salvage a doubleheader split with the Cru Friday afternoon in Belton. UMHB took game one 8-0 before falling 12-9 in 10 innings in game two. The Cru is now 10-11 overall and 2-3 in American Southwest Conference West Division play on the season. McMurry is 8-12 overall and 2-3 in the ASC West Division on the year.

The Cru scored two runs in both the first and second innings of game one and that was more than enough offense for Jared Hopper in UMHB’s 8-0 game one victory. Andrew White doubled home the first run for the Cru and he scored on Chris Joshlin’s RBI single to make it 2-0 UMHB after the first. Joseph Villegas added a two-run single in the bottom of the second to give the Cru a 4-0 edge. Kyle Flynn’s RBI single and back-to-back sacrifice flies from Alfredo Melendez and White made it 7-0 UMHB in the fourth and the Cru added an insurance run on Flynn’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth. Hopper shut out McMurry with seven solid innings to raise his record to 3-1. Hopper scattered eight hits, struck out eight and walked just two for UMHB. Eight different players had a hit for the Cru.

UMHB could not put McMurry away and let leads slip away in the seventh and ninth innings in a 12-9, 10 inning game two loss. McMurry jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Jake Mullin’s RBI single and Jeff Jackson’s three-run home run in the top of the first. Seth Lynn’s RBI single cut it to 4-1 in the bottom of the first and Joshlin’s RBI single in the third cut it to 4-2. McMurry added a run in the top of the fifth to make it 5-2, but the Cru grabbed a 6-5 lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Joshlin singled home the first run, the second run scored on an error and Josh Fredrick doubled home two more, but Derek Draeger was thrown out trying to score on the play to end the inning. White’s RBI groundout in the sixth made it 7-5 UMHB, but McMurry used a pair of homers in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. Mullin’s two-run blast tied the game at seven and Jackson added a solo shot to put McMurry on top. UMHB used Fredrick’s RBI groundout and Flynn’s RBI single to take a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the seventh. It would stay that way until Michael Falcone’s two-out, two-strike RBI single tied the game in the top of the ninth. Jackson would add a two-out, two-strike, three-run home run in the top of the tenth to make it 12-9 McMurry. UMHB would put the leadoff man on base in the bottom of the tenth, but McMurry reliever Chris Semchenko struck out the next three batters to end the game. David Keil took the loss for UMHB to drop to 1-2 on the season. Semchenko picked up the win for McMurry to move to 2-0 on the year. White, Joshlin, Lynn, Draeger and Flynn all had two hits apiece for the Cru. Jackson was 3-6 with 7 RBI for McMurry and Mullin added three hits and three RBI.

The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM single game tomorrow at Red Murff Field. UMHB will then play host to Texas Lutheran University for a three-game ASC West Division series next Friday and Saturday at Red Murff.
