La Verne, CA – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team closed out its California trip with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the University of La Verne Thursday afternoon in La Verne, California. UMHB fell 7-2 in game one before giving up three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 5-4 game two loss. The Cru falls to 8-12 on the season with the two losses. The Leopards improve to 10-10 on the season with the two victories.
            The Cru watched an early lead slip away as La Verne pulled away in the final innings for a 7-2 game one victory. UMHB took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jordan Schrutka singled home Caitlin Bollier. The Leopards would tie the game in the bottom of the first, but Brittany Moreno ripped a solo home run for the Cru to give UMHB a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. La Verne tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-2 game. The Leopards added three more in the sixth on a pair of RBI hits and a run-scoring error to provide the final margin. Kelsey Greeson took the loss for the Cru after giving up nine hits and seven runs. UMHB managed just four hits off of La Verne pitcher Delaney Baylor (6-5).

            UMHB would take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before falling 5-4 in game two.  La Verne would take a 1-0 lead into the top of the fifth inning before Greeson hit a two-run homer to give the Cru a 2-1 lead. The Leopards would tie it in the bottom of the fifth, but Kirstie Curry blasted a two-run, pinch-hit home run in the top of the sixth to make it 4-2 UMHB. La Verne would close to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single and tied the game on a run-scoring error. Lissa Ishihara then drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a double to close out the scoring. UMHB would put the tying run on base in the top of the seventh, but could not get that runner past second base. Erica White took the loss for the Cru after giving up 12 hits and three earned runs in five and a third innings. Greeson and Megan Bohne had two hits apiece for UMHB in the loss.

            The Cru will now return home and return to American Southwest Conference West Division action next week. UMHB will host Schreiner University for a four-game series at Dee Dillon Field beginning with a 1:00 PM doubleheader next Friday.

Athletes of the Week
Max Taylor
Football
Max has been named of 112 finalists for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He has helped organize the UMHB Sole 2 Soul campaign each of the past two years. That campaign has helped raise nearly $3,300 and four boxes of shoes for donation to orphans in Haiti. Max is also a Preseason All-American and one of the team leaders for the Cru football program on and off the field.

Women's Volleyball
Sara has been elected to serve as President of the UMHB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The junior is also a standout on the court for the Cru volleyball team and she will be counted on to serve as a team leader in addition to her duties as SAAC President.
