Claremont, CA – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team watched early leads slip away and the Cru dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wednesday afternoon in Claremont, California. UMHB lost a 5-2 decision in game one and then lost on a walk-off hit in a 6-5 defeat in game two. The Cru drops to 8-10 on the season with the two losses. CMS improves to 11-2 on the year with the two victories.
            UMHB would take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth but could not hold on in the 5-2 game one loss. CMS took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Cru tied it on Kaysie Creech’s RBI single in the top of the second. UMHB would take a 2-1 lead on Courtney Johnston’s sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, but the Athenas answered in the bottom of the frame to tie it. Rebecca King doubled home two runs in the fifth to give CMS a 4-2 lead and the Athenas added an insurance run on Gizella Pera’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Kelsey Greeson took the loss for UMHB to drop to 3-4 on the season. Jessica Oliver and Jordan Schrutka had two hits apiece for the Cru in the game.

            UMHB would tie the game in the fifth and sixth innings, only to see CMS end game two with a walk-off RBI double in a 6-5 decision. Caitlin Bollier scored on an error to give the Cru a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. CMS tied it in the bottom of the first and took a 3-1 lead on Harmony Palmer’s two-run single in the bottom of the third. UMHB closed to 3-2 on Bollier’s RBI single in the fourth, but the Athenas added a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2. UMHB tied the game on RBI singles from Creech and Greeson in the fifth, but CMS answered again to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Megan Bohne’s solo homer tied the game in the top of the sixth. It would stay that way until Megan Morris doubled home the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Hannah White took the loss for UMHB to fall to 0-3 on the season. Brittany Moreno and Greeson had three hits apiece for the Cru and Bohne and Creech added two hits each.

            The Cru will now close out its California trip with one more doubleheader tomorrow. UMHB will take on the University of La Verne in a doubleheader at 1:00 and 3:00 PM Pacific Time.

Sara Hayward
Women's Volleyball
Sara has been elected to serve as President of the UMHB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The junior is also a standout on the court for the Cru volleyball team and she will be counted on to serve as a team leader in addition to her duties as SAAC President.
Max Taylor
Football
Max has been named of 112 finalists for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He has helped organize the UMHB Sole 2 Soul campaign each of the past two years. That campaign has helped raise nearly $3,300 and four boxes of shoes for donation to orphans in Haiti. Max is also a Preseason All-American and one of the team leaders for the Cru football program on and off the field.
