Thousand Oaks, CA – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team took control of game one with a six-run second inning, but the Cru could not hold off California Lutheran in game two as the two teams split a doubleheader Monday afternoon in Thousand Oaks, California. UMHB won a run-rule shortened game one by an 8-0 margin. California Lutheran took game two 1-0 with a two-out run in the bottom of the seventh. The Cru moves to 8-6 on the season following the split. Cal Lutheran is now 7-9 on the year.
UMHB broke open a tight game with a six-run second inning and coasted to an 8-0 win in game one. Kelsey Greeson scored on an illegal pitch in the top of the first inning to make it 1-0 Cru. UMHB then erupted for six more runs in the second. Jordan Schrutka scored the first run on another illegal pitch and Erica Salazar and Courtney Johnston both scored on errors. Caitlin Bollier added an RBI groundout and Megan Bohne had an RBI single before the final run of the frame scored on another error. UMHB added its final run on Johnston’s RBI single in the top of the fifth. Greeson shut the Regals down in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Greeson scattered two hits and struck out six while not walking a batter or allowing a run to raise her record to 3-2 on the season. Salazar and Jessica Oliver had two hits apiece for UMHB in the victory.

The Cru then left nine runners on base before giving up the game’s only run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to drop game two 1-0. UMHB would leave a runner in scoring position in every inning except the first, but the Cru could not push across a run. The game’s only run scored when April Rosas had an infield single with two outs in the seventh and she came around to score on Sara Lichtsinn’s RBI double to end the game. Kirstie Curry took the loss for UMHB after giving up just three hits in five and two-thirds innings of relief. Curry struck out three and walked two.  The Cru managed six hits off Cal Lutheran pitcher Allyson Salas, but was unable to dent the scoreboard.

UMHB will continue its stretch of eight games in four days with another doubleheader tomorrow. The Cru will face University of Redlands tomorrow in a doubleheader at 2:00 and 4:00 PM Pacific Time.
