Softball sweeps Howard Payne again
Courtney Johnston drove in four runs in doubleheader sweep
UMHB takes 8-1 and 8-6 victories to move to 4-0 in ASC West play

Brownwood, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used different methods in the two games, but the results were the same as the Cru posted a second straight doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Brownwood. UMHB took game one 8-1 before coming back for an 8-6 victory in game two. The Cru improves to 7-5 overall and 4-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the two victories. Howard Payne falls to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in the ASC West with the two losses.
            The Cru took control of game one with three straight two-run innings on the way to an 8-1 victory. Megan Bohne led off the second inning with a solo home run and Courtney Johnston added an RBI to make it 2-0. Jessica Oliver singled home a run and Caitlin Bollier added an RBI double as the Cru opened up a 4-0 lead in the top of the third. Kelsey Greeson added an RBI single and scored on Oliver’s RBI double as UMHB stretched it to 6-0 in the top of the fourth. HPU scored a run in the sixth to cut it to 6-1 but Lindsey Gordon singled home two runs in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin. Erica White threw a complete-game seven-hitter to raise her record to 4-1. She struck out seven and walked two. Bohne had three hits for the Cru and Greeson, Oliver and Bollier added two hits apiece for UMHB.

            The Cru then fought back from an early deficit with seven runs on the final three innings to take an 8-6 victory in game two. HPU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Dana Criswell’s RBI single pulled UMHB to within 2-1 in the top of the second. The Yellow Jackets added four more in the bottom of the third for a 6-1 lead before the Cru comeback started. UMHB scored two runs on errors in the top of the fifth to cut it to 6-3 and pulled to within 6-5 with Johnston’s two-run single in the top of the sixth. In the top of the seventh inning, the Yellow Jackets intentionally walked Bohne to load the bases and Brittany Moreno followed with a three-run, two-out triple to give UMHB an 8-6 lead. White pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh to nail down the victory and raise her record to 5-1. Greeson, Oliver and Johnston had two hits apiece to lead the UMHB offense.

            The Cru will now travel to California to play eight games in four days next week. The California trip will open with a doubleheader at California Lutheran on Monday afternoon.

Max Taylor
Football
Max has been named of 112 finalists for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He has helped organize the UMHB Sole 2 Soul campaign each of the past two years. That campaign has helped raise nearly $3,300 and four boxes of shoes for donation to orphans in Haiti. Max is also a Preseason All-American and one of the team leaders for the Cru football program on and off the field.

Women's Volleyball
Sara has been elected to serve as President of the UMHB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The junior is also a standout on the court for the Cru volleyball team and she will be counted on to serve as a team leader in addition to her duties as SAAC President.
