Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a dominating pitching performance to take game one, but the Cru could not overcome a ten-run inning in a game two loss as UMHB split a doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons Saturday afternoon in Abilene. UMHB won game one 7-1 before falling 12-7 in game two. The Cru moves to 9-10 overall and 1-2 in American Southwest Conference West Division play following the split. Hardin-Simmons is now 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the ASC West on the season.
Cameron Arnett sparkled on the mound and the Cru provided more than enough offense in a 7-1 game one victory. UMHB took control of the game with a four-run third inning. Ryan Swindell scored the first run on a balk, Chris Joshlin added an RBI single and Ryan Moreau and Seth Lynn had RBI groundouts. The Cowboys scored a single run in the bottom of the third, but that would be all of the HSU offense. White singled home another run to make it 5-1 in the top of the fourth and he tripled home a run in the sixth to make it 6-1 Cru. Josh Fredrick closed out the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Arnett scattered four hits over seven innings and he struck out four to raise his record to 3-3 on the season. White and Alfredo Melendez had two hits apiece for the Cru.

UMHB could not overcome HSU’s 10-run seventh inning and fell 12-7 in game two. Joseph Villegas had an RBI groundout to give the Cru a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. HSU tied the game in the third, but UMHB put five on the board in the top of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. Fredrick and Doak Fleming both singled home runs, White added a sacrifice fly and the final two runs scored on a throwing error. The Cowboys pulled to within 6-2 with a single run in the bottom of the fourth, but Lynn singled home a run in the top of the seventh to make it 7-2 UMHB. Then the wheels came off in the bottom of the seventh. The Cowboys used six hits and took full advantage of five UMHB errors to put together the 10-run inning. The Cru also walked a couple of batters in the nightmare inning. The Cru could not answer, leaving runners on in the eighth and ninth inning. Lynn took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-2. UMHB managed just six hits off of three HSU pitchers in the game. The Cowboys intentionally walked UMHB slugger Villegas five times in the two games on Saturday after he went 4-5 against HSU in Friday night’s game.

UMHB will now have a week off before returning home to return to ASC West Division action. The Cru will host McMurry University for a three-game series next weekend at Red Murff Field. The two teams will open the series with a 2:00 PM single game next Friday before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
