Cru loses five-set heartbreaker in opening match
Irving, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team grabbed an early lead but could not hold on in a five-set loss to Hendrix College Friday in the opening match of the University of Dallas Invitational. The Cru then dropped a three-set decision to tournament host University of Dallas to close out the first day. UMHB falls to 0-4 on the season with the two losses. Hendrix and Dallas both improve to 3-0 on the year with the wins.
            The Cru won the opening set and then took the fourth set before Hendrix held on for a 15-25, 25-11, 25-14, 24-26, 15-11 victory in the opening match of the day. Anissa Garcia led UMHB with 20 assists and she added nine digs. Erin Maenius had a team-best 31 digs and Tina Miller topped the Cru with 11 kills. Kaydie Cochran added nine kills and 10 digs and Jasmine Harris recorded eight kills. Alexis Tharp also reached double figures in assists with 11 for UMHB.

            The Cru could not dig its way out of an early hole in a 25-12, 25-18, 25-22 loss to University of Dallas to close out the day. Garcia had 11 assists and nine digs. Maenius added 19 digs and a pair of service aces. Cochran had eight kills and five digs and Miller chipped in six kills for the Cru in the match.

            The Cru will close out the tournament with two more matches tomorrow. UMHB will open the day with a 1:00 PM match against Sul Ross State. The Cru closes out the tournament with a 4:30 PM match against Arlington Baptist. UMHB will then return home for the 2010 home opener in a tri-match that also includes Concordia Texas and Victoria College next Tuesday, September 7th.

Miranda Shorter
Women's Basketball
Miranda averaged 9.5 points per game over two contests last weekend. She is one of just three seniors on this year's team. Miranda has started 16 of the Cru's 17 games and she currently ranks third on the team in scoring.
Thomas Orr
Men's Basketball
Thomas hit a pair of clutch free throws with 2.1 seconds left in overtime to give the Cru a 75-73 victory over Hardin-Simmons last week. He averaged 13.0 points per game and added a season-high 15 points to keep UMHB in the game in a narrow 75-71 loss to McMurry University.
