Farmer’s Branch, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked teams on the opening day of the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament Friday afternoon in Farmer’s Branch. The Cru opened the day with a 4-3 loss to #2-ranked East Texas Baptist and then fell to #14 Louisiana College 5-1 to close out the day. The losses drop UMHB to 2-4 on the season.
The Cru had a chance to take a late lead, but a crucial double play cost them in the 4-3 loss to ETBU. UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead when Megan Bohne homered to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Kaysie Creech added a two-run homer in the third to give the Cru a 3-0 lead. ETBU tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. The Tigers used two hits and a pair of costly Cru errors to push the runs across. The Tigers then scored what proved to be the game-winner on Meghan Fisher’s RBI single in the top of the seventh. The Cru then went in order in the bottom of the seventh. Erica White took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season after scattering seven hits and allowing just two earned runs. Ayrika Henderson picked up the win for ETBU.

The Cru then gave up five runs in the final two runs in the 5-1 loss to Louisiana College. Kelsey Brown’s three-run homer gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning. UMHB cut it to 3-1 on Brittany Moreno’s sacrifice fly. But LC added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a Cru error. Hannah White took the loss for the Cru to fall to 0-2 on the year. Rene’ Schwartzenburg picked up the win for the Wildcats.

UMHB will close out the tournament against U.T.-Tyler and U.T.-Dallas tomorrow. The Cru will face the Patriots at 10:00 AM before taking on the Comets in a 3:00 PM start.
