Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team saw leads of 5-0 and 8-5 slip away as U.T.-Dallas scored 11 runs in the final three innings for an 11-8 victory over the Cru Friday afternoon in Belton. UMHB falls to 7-5 on the season with the loss. The Comets improve to 7-3 with the victory.
            UMHB took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Joseph Villegas’ RBI single and Josh Fredrick’s sacrifice fly. Seth Lynn tripled home a run and Andrew White added an RBI fielder’s choice as the Cru stretched it to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Joshlin’s RBI groundout in the fifth gave UMHB a 5-0 edge, but the Comets tied the game with five runs in the top of the seventh. Randy Lorber doubled home the first run and Grant Fridell added a two-run double. An RBI groundout would cut it to 5-4 and Matt Kelly tied the game with an RBI double. UMHB would retake the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Villegas tripled home the go-ahead run and Seth Lynn added a two-run single. The Comets cut it to 8-6 in the top of the eighth and then exploded for five more runs in the top of the ninth. Adam Hudec’s pinch-hit double drove in the first run and Derek Mott’s RBI double tied the game at eight. Jacob Starnes gave the Comets their first lead of the day with a two-run single and Joseph Killgore added an insurance run with an RBI single. The Cru would put a runner on base in the bottom of the ninth, but could not score.

            Lynn took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-1 on the season. Leonard Wong earned the win for UTD to move to 1-0 and Adam Spinn notched his third save of the season for the Comets. Villegas was 4-4 for the Cru with two RBI, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Lynn, White and Kyle Flynn had two hits apiece for UMHB. Killgore had four hits for UTD and Kelly and Starnes added three hits apiece in an 18-hit barrage for the Comets.

            The two teams will close out the series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow at Red Murff Field. The Cru will then hit the road to face Marietta College Tuesday afternoon in Abilene.

Max Taylor
Football
Max has been named of 112 finalists for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He has helped organize the UMHB Sole 2 Soul campaign each of the past two years. That campaign has helped raise nearly $3,300 and four boxes of shoes for donation to orphans in Haiti. Max is also a Preseason All-American and one of the team leaders for the Cru football program on and off the field.

Women's Volleyball
Sara has been elected to serve as President of the UMHB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The junior is also a standout on the court for the Cru volleyball team and she will be counted on to serve as a team leader in addition to her duties as SAAC President.
