Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team took control of the game in the second half and the Cru women posted an 82-70 victory over Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The win is #13 in a row for the Cru women and moves UMHB’s record to 17-4 overall and 14-3 in American Southwest Conference play. The Cru women also clinch a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament with the victory. The Cowgirls fall to 11-10 overall and 8-9 in the ASC on the season with the loss.
            The Cowgirls opened the game with a 9-2 run, but UMHB battled back and grabbed a 34-31 halftime lead on Stacie Stephens’ three-pointer. HSU would close to within 36-35 with 17:35 remaining in the game, but UMHB used a 6-0 run to push the lead to 42-35. HSU would get back to within two points at 42-40 with 15:07 left to play. The Cru once again answered, going on an 11-2 run to open up an 11-point lead. The Cowgirls could not get closer than nine points the rest of the way as UMHB would stretch the lead to as many as 16 points before coasting to the win.

            Lindsay Eaton led the Cru with a season-high 27 points and she added five rebounds and four assists. Kallie White had 17 points and a team-high six rebounds and Stephens also reached double figures for UMHB with 10 points. Angela Newcombe topped HSU with 19 points and she also grabbed nine rebounds. Jasmine Lewis had 18 points and Bo Warm and Alexis Popelar chipped in with 11 points apiece for the Cowgirls.

            UMHB shot 52 per cent from the field and turned the ball over just 12 times in the victory. HSU shot 38 per cent from the field and out rebounded UMHB 41-33 in the game.

            The Cru women will host Texas Lutheran University for a 5:30 PM tip-off next Thursday in the regular season home finale. The UMHB women will then close out the regular season with road games at Schreiner University, Sul Ross State and Howard Payne.

Sterling Phillips
Men's Basketball
Sterling was named MVP of the ASC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament after leading the Cru in scoring in all three games. He helped lead the UMHB men to their second ASC Championship in the last three seasons and the Cru also earned its third trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Sterling also earned Honorable Mention ASC All-West Division honors this season.    
Brittany Moreno
Softball
Brittany batted .363 and hit a home run for the Cru in the ASC First Pitch Tournament last weekend in Farmer's Branch. She drove in three runs and scored two more during the week. Her slugging percentage was .727 over the weekend.
