Cru gives up game-winning run in bottom of ninth

Tyler, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not hold on to a late lead and the Cru lost an 8-7 heartbreaker to U.T.-Dallas Saturday afternoon in Tyler. The loss drops UMHB to 2-1 on the season. The Comets move to 1-1 on the season with the victory.
            The Cru would grab a 1-0 lead on Josh Fredrick’s RBI single in the top of the first inning. UTD answered with a four-run bottom of the first inning. The Comets took advantage of two hits, two walks, a hit batter, an error and a passed ball to build the 4-1 lead. Seth Lynn walked with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-2 and the Cru tied the game at four when Doak Fleming doubled home a run and scored on Andrew White’s RBI fielder’s choice in the top of the sixth. UTD would add a run in the bottom of the sixth but UMHB used a three-run seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Chris Joshlin’s solo homer started the scoring and White added a two-run single. The Comets fought back to tie the game at seven with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jacob Starnes singled home the first run and the tying run scored on a double play. UTD then used a one-out walk and single to put runners on first and second. After a pop out for the second out, Larry Bolding singled up the middle to score the game-winning run.

            White was 2-6 with three RBI for the Cru. Doak Fleming added three hits for UMHB and Joshlin, Cameron Arnett and Kyle Flynn also had two hits apiece for the Cru. Joseph Villegas also added a single to give him 208 hits in his career and tie Willard O’Neal’s UMHB career record for hits. Kyle Guest had two of the Comets’ nine hits.

            Adrian Montoya took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-1. Montoya have up four hits and three runs in two and a third innings. Adam Spinn earned the win for UTD with two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.  

            UMHB will now turn around and face U.T.-Tyler in a 6:00 PM start. The Cru will then return home for the 2010 home opener against Trinity University next Tuesday at 2:00 PM.

Miranda Shorter
Women's Basketball
Miranda averaged 9.5 points per game over two contests last weekend. She is one of just three seniors on this year's team. Miranda has started 16 of the Cru's 17 games and she currently ranks third on the team in scoring.

Men's Basketball
Thomas hit a pair of clutch free throws with 2.1 seconds left in overtime to give the Cru a 75-73 victory over Hardin-Simmons last week. He averaged 13.0 points per game and added a season-high 15 points to keep UMHB in the game in a narrow 75-71 loss to McMurry University.
