Women's soccer beats ETBU 1-0 in ASC Tournament

Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s soccer team used a timely goal from Erin Salyer and a solid defensive effort to post a 1-0 victory over East Texas Baptist in the opening round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Abilene. The UMHB women improve to 12-5 on the season with the victory and the Cru women posted the first ASC Tournament win in the history of the program. The loss ends ETBU’s season at 10-7 overall.
            The two teams were scoreless through the first half before the Cru finally broke through 60:28 into the match. Erin Salyer scored off an assist from Lexy Smith to give UMHB a 1-0 lead. The Cru defense would make it stand up as Allyson Sargeant finished with six saves in goal to post the shutout. Sargeant posted three second-half saves for UMHB. Tamara Carlisle finished with three saves in goal for the Tigers.

            UMHB will now advance to the semifinals of the ASC Tournament tomorrow. The Cru women will take on tournament host and defending ASC Champion Hardin-Simmons University in an 11:00 AM start tomorrow. The winner of that match will advance to Sunday’s 1:00 PM championship match.

Athletes of the Week
Brittany Moreno
Softball
Brittany batted .363 and hit a home run for the Cru in the ASC First Pitch Tournament last weekend in Farmer's Branch. She drove in three runs and scored two more during the week. Her slugging percentage was .727 over the weekend.
Sterling Phillips
Men's Basketball
Sterling was named MVP of the ASC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament after leading the Cru in scoring in all three games. He helped lead the UMHB men to their second ASC Championship in the last three seasons and the Cru also earned its third trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Sterling also earned Honorable Mention ASC All-West Division honors this season.
