Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team climbed three spots and re-entered the nation’s top 10 in the American Football Coaches Association’s Top 25 Poll this week. The Cru moved up to #9 in the nation with 652 total points after beating East Texas Baptist University 52-10 last Saturday in Belton. Defending national champion Mount Union picked up 39 first-place votes and holds down the top spot with 999 total points. Wisconsin-Whitewater took the other first-place vote and 961 total points and the Warhawks are #2 in the country. UMHB is the only American Southwest Conference program ranked in this week’s AFCA Top 25, as Mississippi College fell out of the top 25 in the wake of Saturday’s 38-24 loss to Howard Payne.

RICHARDSON, Texas –– The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor went 11-2 in league play to become regular season champions for the first time in program history and also earned the right to host the 2009 American Southwest Conference Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament on Nov. 6-8 at Cru Sports Plex in Belton, Texas.   The entire six-team, single elimination event will be available for fans through live statistics, while Sunday’s championship game will also have live audio. All links can be found on the “Tournament Central” page on the conference’s website, www.ASCsports.org.   Head coach Brad Bankhead’s Cru (13-3) earned a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed. UMHB will also be serving as host of the ASC men’s soccer tournament for the first time in program history. Hardin-Simmons University (9-2-5), which has won two of the last four ASC titles and six overall, locked up the No. 2 seed and the other first-round bye.   The University of the Ozarks (12-4-2), the 2003 ASC champion, will be the No. 3 seed. Schreiner University (8-6-3), Howard Payne University (9-7-1) and Mississippi College (12-4-3) all had the same conference winning percentage, but due to the league tie-breaker procedure, Schreiner will be the No. 4 seed, Howard Payne will be No. 5 and Mississippi College will be No. 6.   Friday’s first-round matchups include SU against HPU at 11 a.m., with the winner getting UMHB in Saturday’s 11 a.m. semifinal. UO and MC will duel on Friday at 2 p.m., with the victor going against HSU at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals. HSU enters with a 16-game winning streak and has not lost to a conference opponent in 129 straight games. The University of Texas at Tyler (12-4), which reached the ASC title game in 2007, locked up the No. 2 seed and will receive the other first-round bye.   Mississippi College (11-5-2) will be the No. 3 seed because of a head-to-head tie-breaker advantage over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (11-5), which will be the No. 4 seed. East Texas Baptist University (10-6) is the No. 5 seed, while 2002 ASC champion University of Texas at Dallas (7-7-4) secured the sixth seed. UTD reached the ASC championship game last year.   Friday’s first-round matchups will be UMHB against ETBU at 11 a.m., with the winner getting HSU in Saturday’s 11 a.m. semifinal. MC and UTD will duel on Friday at 2 p.m., with the victor going against UT Tyler at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals. Belton, TX – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football player Bryson Tucker has been named American Southwest Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Cru’s 52-10 victory over East Texas Baptist last Saturday. Tucker, a senior running back/defensive back/kick returner from Caldwell High School, scored the game’s first points on a 47-yard punt return. He finished with 51 yards in punt returns, 20 yards on a kickoff return and 46 yards rushing and a touchdown on eight carries to help lead UMHB to the win. Tucker shares the weekly honor with Louisiana College kick returner Jordan Rideaux.
